Today started with a headache, late start due to snow, and a daughter with a sore ankle. Not wanting to continue my day like that I called a friend and suggested coffee. In case you haven’t caught on yet, I like coffee. Even better than the coffee itself is the time to get away from life’s daily grind and chat with a friend. It never gets old, at least not for me!

I decided while dropping my kids off at school to grab all of our box tops from the hallway and bring them along so I could be productive during “play time”. Or maybe it’s just because I find cutting to be therapeutic. Go ahead, laugh, but it’s true. Everyone has that one weird thing that makes them happy. For me, it’s cutting things out - and my favorite is laminated projects. LOL

So while we had our lattes we faithfully cut out Box Tops for Education. Did I mention my friend likes to cut too? LOL After we finished we decided to drop off the labels at the school and sneak a peek at a Pampered Chef catalog a teachers assistant had mentioned to us. When we went into the library we didn’t see the TA, but we saw a huge pile of stuff waiting to be cut out. We decided it would be great fun to try to get it all cut out before the TA arrived back. We cut and we giggled. We gossiped and we laughed. It was so nice to be doing something “extra” and unexpected for our TA. She walked in before we were even halfway done, but she gasped and thanked us over and over again. My friend and I finished our work, cleaned everything up, left it on her desk and returned home.

My point is that we go every week and help at school doing the exact same thing as we did today. We spend several hours cutting, pasting, grading, sorting etc weekly during our parent group time. What we did today wasn’t anything special, except that it was unexpected. Just doing something we normally do at a completely random time brought someone additional joy, and in turn did the same for us.

The next time you think that it wouldn’t make a big difference to spend 15 minutes at your child’s school helping out, think again. Every 15 minutes you take to help a teacher is an extra 15 minutes they can use to help a child directly. And you might be really surprised at good it makes you feel!!!
