Happy Birthday to My Guy!

posted in yada yada yada |

Today is my dear hubby’s birthday. I am so excited! You would think that after being married almost 12 years that celebrating might get kind of old, but it doesn’t. Each year I’ve continued to be inspired on something new to do, and this birthday is no exception!

I actually started a day early for the first time, arrainging for his boss to have a meeting with him so I could sneak in with my friends and decorate his office. Last year I did something similar, but since his birthday was during the work week it was easier, I just went in the night before. This year I had to pull more strings to get in. :)

We went crazy with streamers, decorations and confetti. Then to be silly I used only punching balloons as decorations - knowing that he would have visitors come into his office who wouldn’t be able to resist playing with them. LOL Then I added some tacky Bling Bling jewelry that I picked up at a dollar store, wrapping it around his computer, pictures, and even putting one on the Rock-em Sock-em Robots I got him last year. That was the hardest part, trying to top the Rock-em Sock-em Robots. I know he got a good laugh out of them and has played with them and his employees many times. However, I did find something that I felt was just as funny, albeit not quite as useful. I found a Shaggy (Zoinks!) Chia Pet on clearance at Target. We laughed so hard at it, and so did my guy. :) Plus he got tons of attention at work, which was my biggest goal.

Next off I had a friend take both kids so when he came home it was to a kid free house. He had no idea, so it was nice surprise! We then decided to go have a nice dinner, grab a hot chocolate and slurpee (his addiction) and head to get our son. Our daughter did her first real sleepover last night - wow!

This morning I let him sleep in, now he’s off getting his slurpee and our daughter. I am making lunch and starting his cake. He has no idea that we have a date to go to a play this afternoon, another surprise I planned! I am going to go get his gift and set it out so when he heads up for his shower it’s on our bed, something he won’t be expecting. His gift? A new suitcase (he travels all the time) packed full of his favorite name brand clothes. I did some GREAT shopping and got amazing deals - over $600 worth of name brand clothes for less than $150. Nice! :) I also got his new suitcase for 70% off. So he’ll go up for a shower, see it, open it and get another surprise. The thing is he isn’t expecting anything - I got him an xbox 360 with all of the fixings for Christmas so he didn’t feel he needed anything else.

I don’t think I’m telling him where we are going until we are driving there. Then after the play I’m going to cook his favorite dinner, we’ll have some family time with the kids, do the cake thing, and send them to bed.

So, even after all of these years, and all of these birthdays, I am still not tired of trying to surprise him. I still get so excited, and while I don’t always get it right, it’s fun trying!!!

Off I go - time to make a cake and get rolling! :)

Ok, I have two comments. First - that is totally amazing. I have done big birthdays but nothing like that. And I got so burnt out trying to outdo myself all the time, I finally just stopped. Our money is always all jacked by the time his birthday rolls around so he’s lucky to even get a cake. Your guy is very very lucky.

Two - does he reciprocate? If not, do you feel awful about it? If so - man, you are like the ideal couple! LOL

Some years are easier than others to come up with new ideas. This was one of those years. :) Money is tight for us right now too (because it’s not long after Christmas) but I’ve tried to pinch pennies the last few weeks and combined with the great bargins I got it went really far.

Last year money was really tight and I spent most of it on the office decorations. They pack the biggest punch as he gets so much attention. I also created a pyramid of Pepsi for him covering half of his desk last year using all different sizes of cans and bottles. He had pepsi for a long time! LOL Then I added a lot of junk food and it didn’t cost me too much, yet he really enjoyed it. We don’t keep those things around the house, so it was a treat for him.

He doesn’t really reciprocate. Sometimes he gets creative, but not usually. However, when he does it usually starts with an awesome poem. One year the poem was at Christmas and it led me to other parts of the poem which led me to the gift, tickets to Les Mis. I got another poem this Christmas which I loved dearly - and to be honest I think those mean more to me than almost anything else. Another birthday I really loved was when I was pregnant with our daughter and on bedrest. All I wanted was flowers. Ususally he would have gotten me something else, figuring I wasn’t serious and what kind of gift is that. But that year he got me two dozen roses and it was awesome.

So - it’s a mixed lot. I’ve had years that are great, and years where he’s totally dropped the ball. He’s certainly not into it like I am, but that’s ok. At least most of the time I say that! LOL
